WATERSENS expected outcomes
.png)
- Optimisation and Implementation of six innovative technologies for DWM.
- Design of a novel governance framework for the analysis of DWMs adoption to facilitate replicability and transfer to the market.
- Development of a Governance Decision Support System (DSS) for DWM design and integration.
- Strengthen public participation and create of circular business models around decentralised solutions through co-design processes.
- Use of the scientific findings published for further R&D activities and support the implementation of relevant EU policy needs.
Our key expoitable results
Floating treatment wetlands (FTWs)
They are used for rural wastewater and urban stormwater treatment, retrofitting stormwater ponds, and restoring eutrophic water bodies. Responsible partners RIA with Phytobatea® technology.
Photo-bioelectrochemical systems
Combined with two-stage denitrifying bioreactors, they enable the reuse of urban wastewater by achieving discharge or irrigation quality standards. Responsible partners AQUALIA.
Biofilter technology
It aims to create a standardised methodology for circular treatment trains using biofilters and biochar to treat contaminated river water from informal settlements and reuse it in agriculture. Responsible partner University of Cape Town
Green infrastructure systems
Combining green walls and green roofs, provide integrated greywater and stormwater treatment for irrigation and household non-potable uses. Responsible partner Associação do Instituto Superior Técnico para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento – IST-ID
Collection cistern technology
It aims to create a standardised methodology for constructing rainwater-harvesting cisterns for domestic use. Responsible partner National Technical University of Athens.
Governance modelling framework
A framework for water service decentralisation, incorporating multi-criteria evaluation and cost-benefit analyses across different management levels. Responsible partners KLINK, University of Pisa, Autorita Di Bacino Distrettuale (ABDS)and ACQUE.
Commercial DSS framework
It aims to help decision-makers assess and design DWM solutions. Responsible partners ITG Technology Centre and University of Cantabria.
Long-term impact
WATERSENS develops a comprehensive framework for the selection, design, integration, and operation of DWM systems.
This framework is implemented in a Decision Support System (DSS) that combines 6 aspects:
01
02
03
04
05
01
Accelerated adoption of decentralised and nature-based water solutions
02
Improved water security and climate resilience
03
Significant environmental benefits through cleaner water and higher reuse rates
04
More efficient and cost-effective wastewater treatment models
